Taru Mitra : Gujarat School Intervention Programme

Background:

“Learning: the Treasure Within” is the report to UNESCO of the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century. The Commission has focused its reflection on one central and all-encompassing question: what kind of education is needed for what kind of society of tomorrow? It attempted to consider the new roles of education and the new demands made on education systems in a world of accelerating economic, environmental and social change and tension.

At the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg in September 2002, a recommendation was made to the UN General Assembly to adopt a “Decade of Education for Sustainable Development”. On December 20, 2002, the UN General Assembly adopted, by consensus, a resolution establishing a United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). The resolution designates the ten-year period as 2005-2014, and proclaims UNESCO as the lead agency to promote the Decade.

The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is an opportunity to remind everyone children, youth, ant adults — that the sustainable development agenda I in fad an agenda for all of us. It is about the way we live our lives, the way. we respect the lives of others - far and near, present and future - and our attitudes to the world around us.

Education at all levels can shape the world of tomorrow, equipping individuals and societies with the skills, perspectives, knowledge and values to live and work in a sustainable manner Education today needs to give people the global perspectives and connections, at the same time enable them to interpret generic learning in their local context, and to not only act locally, but see the wider impacts of theft actions.

Under this backdrop Tani Mitra sees its humble role to join the global movement of UNESCO towards the Education for Sustainable Future by this innovative approach of providing supportive role to schools.

Concept:

Great many numbers of schools are having “Eco-club” activities and their list can be obtained from the education department - GoG or Municipal Corporation. Some times because of the lack of proper motivation or ideas about the meaningful and interesting activities they get demoralize and become in-active. We can approach these schools with well designed modules and offer them three types of program.

Regular Monthly Program: We can offer them that our facilitators will visit your school once every month with 2 hour program on the various topics related to environment and interact with 50 to 100 students regularly.
AND / OR
One time event of 4 Hours: We can offer environment related program of 3 to 4 hours in which whole school can participate. The program can be designed in such a way that all the classes from 1st standard to 7th standard can participate in the program, specially designed in keeping their level of understanding and interest.
AND / OR
Environment Education Camp with one night halt: Tailor-made and sponsored or paid workshops or Environment Education Camps can be organized with the expertise and time available with the partners of the TaruMitra group.
