Jangam Shala : School on Wheels
(Community Oriented Education At Doorstep):

Background:

Education is a life long process and you cannot restrict the process of education within the four walls of a school. In the era of 21st century we need to create a “Learning Society” in which “Education through life and Education throughout life” takes place. In the UNESCO report of the international commission on “Education for the twenty-first century”, - “Learning: the Treasure Within” - it is felt that education throughout life is based upon four pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be.

Education is a basic human right and a universal human value which should be available over the entire lifetime of each individual. Education is also the responsibility of the whole of society: all persons involved and all partnerships – in addition to those incumbent on institutions. Looking to these considerations Jeevantirth proposes “School on Wheels” to bring education at their doorsteps for the vulnerable section of the rural – urban societies, especially keeping focus on children, women, youths and working class.

Area of Operation:

Initially 20 “Sabar Sena Villages” and 5 “Urban Slums Areas” of Ahmadabad will be taken as a project area. Sabar Sena Villages are the villages on both the banks of river Sabarmati between Ahmadabad and Gandhinagar in which Jeevantirth worked under the UNDP – GEF – Small Grant Project with the Schools and Rural Youths to Protect River based Civilization, Economy and Ecology by training in Natural Resource Management with special emphasis on Soil and Water Conservation. 5 urban Slum areas will be selected in consultation with the partner organisations working in the urban slums.

Suggestive Programmes

Looking to the wide diversity of situations, needs, means and aspirations existing in the region we need to adopt innovative feasible approach. In designing content and methodology of the educational programs we must take in to account basic and agreed-upon values and concerns of the international community and of the United Nations system: human rights, tolerance and understanding, democracy, responsibility, universality, cultural identity, the search for peace, the preservation of the environment, the sharing of knowledge, alleviation of poverty, population control and health.

Special emphasis will be given on the programs which are in compliance with the agenda of “The United nations Decade of Education for Sustainable development (DESD 2005-2014)” which aims to promote education as a bases for a more sustainable human society and to intrigate sustainable development into education system at all levels.

ESD applies trance disciplinary educational methods and approaches to develop an ethic for lifelong learning. “School on Wheels” wants to nurture reverence for life and respect for the earth’s natural resources. |
