The 10th and 12th standard board exams weigh too much upon the school children because of the enormous importance these exams are given. Ramapir no Tekro, the largest slum of Ahmedabad, is like any other slum where houses are closely packed in clusters and lanes are as narrow as they can get. Moreover the houses are as small as 10 feet by 10 feet; with the whole family in such a small house noise is inevitable. For a student preparing for his boards such an environment wouldn’t help but rather create more frustration.
To combat this Jeevantirth decided to create a reading room where students appearing in 10th and 12th board exams could study for 2 months prior to the exams; 24 hours a day. We also assigned a teacher to the room whom the students consulted to solve their questions. Certain reference books were also established in the room’s library to help the students better. These 2 months the students give it all they have; to soothe their hardworking minds we also arranged for snacks and tea breaks.
One of the students achieved 81% in his exams; he said that the reading room created an environment that was conducive to his studying which helped him better prepare for his exams. We plan to do this for upcoming years.
