Welcome to Jeevantirth
Jeevantirth literally means “Life Pilgrimage”. Reverence for life is the foundation stone of Jeevantirth Trust. Logo of Jeevantirth suggests that we want world without war. By breaking war based economy and creating a non exploitative world with Equity and Justice we can bring Harmony and lasting Peace. Whatever we do and whenever we evaluate the work of Jeevantirth, we always keep in our mind our motto – To be full of Joy, Love and Understanding and to spread them.
Trustees and workers of Jeevantirth consider themselves as “Lifelong learners”, believing in – Education through life and education throughout life. They also consider Jeevantirth as a school for life lovers, “Jeevan Premio Ni Shala”.
Jeevantirth is established on14th July 1997 by Raju and Deepti, a couple who became active in social life since “Movement for Total Revolution” initiated by Loknayak Jayprakesh Narayan, renowned Gandhian in 1973-74. After completing their studies in Engineering and Commerce, Raju worked as a lecturer and Deepti in Bank for several years. Both left their lucrative careers in 1985 and decided to devote their life in work for the vulnerable sections of the society, especially rural children, women and youth based on Gandhian Ideologies.
Jeevantirth is mainly working in the fields of Education, Environment, Rural Development and Human Rights related issues. Along with direct implementation of the innovative cost effective projects, Jeevantirth has specialized itself in capacity building of the grass-root organizations, teacher’s training and material development.
In the era of LPG (Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization), there is a vulgar commercialization of education. On the other side children of rural or urban poor do not get quality education. There cannot be equity and justice so long as we have different schools – some for the rich and others for the poor.
Our main concern is how to give quality education to the most vulnerable sections of the society.
We also focus on Need Based Education, Life Skill Education, Citizenship Training, Education for Sustainable Development, Value Education and Education for Peace.
We are made up of and nourished by five basic elements: The Earth, The Water, The Fire, The Air and The Space. It is in our own interest that we protect sanctity of these elements. Reverence for life is the foundation of our environmental activism. Soil and Water Conservation, Rain Water Harvesting, Tree Protection and Plantation, Nature Education Camp, Natural Resource Management Training, Awareness Campaign, Mass Movement to save environment and Preparation of Environment Education Material are some of our activities in the field of environment.
From our long standing experience of social life we came to conclusion that ‘Dominance of Wasted Interest Groups and Inertia of the People’ are the two main stumbling blocks to rural development and outsiders can do little to change. We humbly believe that real Village Self Rule (Gram Swaraj) can come through local, dynamic youth leadership. Through our “Participatory Strategic Planning” training with the theme of “Role of Youth for Rural Development” we work in the direction of rural development.
Our inspiration for working in this field is Gandhiji’s talisman.
“I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away.”
Do we need to say anything more?
